A slow start for charter schools in Virginia

A slow start for charter schools in Virginia
Well apparently I'm not the only one who is off to a slow start. (smile, reference to first blog entry) Starting a Blog for Elementary Art Educators has been a long term thought but honestly a fear of the "unknown" world of Blogging eluded me but, I learn better by doing so....I'm trying. (another smile) One of the things I miss about the sometimes secluded world of elementary art education is "ARTiculation" about our craft. (Slight frown)The engaging force of ideas and thoughts about lessons, art education in general, media, public perceptions of the arts, politics,etc...is well ARTiculating. I feel conversation and just letting people engage with one another inspires us and I know no other subject than the arts (music, performing, written, etc) that can make simple ideas become captivating, ( lots of  big hand gestures) smile. So, I'm approaching my first open discussion about something I wanted to explore, learn and ARTiculate about......Charter Schools in Virginia. My idea is one where we focus on the arts of course but we still need to pass SOL standards and teach core subjects with the main focus being on how students are evaluated. (Charter schools can create their own plan of action for evaluation and assessment.)  Portfolios have been used in the arts for centuries as a means of evaluation so my question in connection with the linked article about Charter Schools........Could an arts based charter school in Virginia be a positive/successful cooperative to students and staff ?
